'One of the big challenges for rural communities is how to attract - and keep a skilled workforce. It's an issue that has prompted a number of studies, one of which investigated the question of how rural communities can maximise the benefit from highly skilled workers in the context of an increasingly mobile and transitory workforce'.

What is your background?
I spent the last 30 years as a professional performing artist appearing in 12 major musicals with the likes of Paul Yes Prime Minister Eddington, Reg Livermore and Phyllis Diller.
I later wrote and toured my own one woman shows both nationally and internationally with highlights being The Covent Garden Opera Festival, Australia House performances, Greenwich Festival in London, Royal Festival Hall London, Manannan International Opera Festival Isle of Man and with Ben Elton in the Aberdeen Comedy Festival. I have performed with major symphony orchestras throughout the world and have done tours of America the UK, Spain, Singapore and New Zealand.
Why did you start ‘UREAL FLOWERS’?
After semi-retiring on The Sunshine Coast in Queensland I eventually had some leisure time and revisited my childhood love of flowers and floral art. I took some classes and discovered I loved the process and eventually opened my little cottage industry in my Wurtulla Queensland home
What are the good parts of your business?
The good parts are that I completely loose myself when working on a design, I love the problem solving process and just playing with colour and texture to see where my imagination leads me.
And the challenges?
The not so good parts are I have no sales or business skills but am slowly learning. I have joined a business networking group and the other members are very generous with their time and knowledge.
The arrangements themselves are often very large and if they don't sell they are hard to store - I have them all over the place.
What have you learnt from your business?
I have learnt That there is something else in life apart from showbiz and it's OK to relax sometimes.
Where To Next?
I will never completely retire, I am too active and energetic. (Judy‘s mother is 99 years of age, and Judy says, 'I am expecting to be around a while!’).
I still do performing jobs and am very involved in my work with Volunteering Sunshine Coast where I am an interviewer.
I think the trick is to keep relevant ie never say no to new things or an invitation or some fun you might be able to have or generate.
Older age is a great privilege and offers the opportunity for a second go at life on a much less stressful level.
